2017 Saladino Tournament Quarterfinals

Riverview 2, Leto 1 F/8

Riverview senior Tyler Salomon’s single to left-center pushed the Sharks game-winner across fending off a tough challenge from Leto in the eighth inning, and sealing a semifinal berth with a 2-1 win. Salomon went 3-for-4 for the Sharks, and also scoring a run and stealing a base. The single in the eighth plated Ben Migliarese. Leto took the lead in the third as an infield single by Andreas Morales drove in Javy Hernandez (2-for-3, double), but the Sharks responded in the home half as Javier Rosario singled in Salomon. The Falcons threatened in the eighth with singles from Joshua Cruz and Jose Martinez, but Riverview’s defense ended the trouble as Freddy Tarnok (who had a double on offense) started a double-play tossing to Salomon at second, who completed the transition with a throw to Garrett Thompson at first.

Alonso 4, Newsome 3 F/8

The lead changed three times before Alonso finally broke an eighth-inning tie when Ryan Drumheller’s hard groundball single through the middle plated pinch-runner Jonathan Cruz. Drumheller went 2-for-4 in the win and also scored a run. Newsome took the lead in the third as Dan Neely doubled in the gap to plate the first run. Alonso responded in the bottom third as Jared DeSantolo’s two-out triple plated Jordan Butler. Butler, a Florida commit, doubled to the deepest part of the field at Brandon High to plate Drumheller in the fifth, but Newsome would answer again in the top of the seventh as Auston Spires singled to right to score Tyler Rohrberg and Josh Costlow. Alonso got one back in the seventh as Butler (3-for-4) singled in Jose Ciccarello to send it to extras. Ciccarello (who had a double in the win) was solid on the field at shortstop in tandem with nice play from second baseman Nick Gonzalez, who made a great catch on a ball out of play behind the first base bag. Both teams got quality starts from pitchers as Newsome’s Will Ohme struck out seven allowing 2 earned runs, and Alonso’s Franco Aleman struck out five allowing three runs. Jorge Oleaga earned the win in relief for the Ravens with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

Jesuit 9, Steinbrenner 0

A seven-inning, five-hit shutout tossed by Price Sartor did the job against Steinbrenner, as the Jesuit offense got ahead early and had a huge seven run sixth inning to topple the defending Saladino Tournament champions. Sartor struck out five and walked a pair in the win. Jesuit got all it would need in the second as Duncan Hunter doubled to center scoring Joel Brewer (2-for-4, double), following that up was Garrett Sheppard who singled in Hunter in the next at bat. Hunter (3-for-4) got the big inning started as well with a RBI single in the sixth. Sheppard finished with three RBI in the win, while McGuire Weaver, Alex Mocny, Mitchell Thrower and Carter Anderson had an RBI in the win.

Carrollwood Day 9, Plant 3

The top of the Carrollwood Day lineup continued their hot tourney at the plate as Rodrigo Montenegro went 3-for-5 and scored three times and Frank Furey went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as the Patriots took care of Plant in the nightcap Thursday. But the night belonged to Furey, as the lefty worked six innings striking out eight, allowing two unearned runs on just three hits. Grant Walford also had a solid night at the plate going 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. The triple in the second inning was a liner to right field and drove in a pair of runs. Andre Hevesy had a pair of hits and two RBI in the win for the Patriots as well. For Plant, Brock fagler had a pair of hits, and AJ Hubbard got an RBI the hard way wearing a pitch in the fifth inning. Plant added a late run as Connor Scott scored on an error in the seventh, but the game was all CDS as the Patriots pounded out 14 hits.
