Snell's Best Start Ends With Rays 5th Straight Loss

ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- For the first time this season, Blake Snell completed seven innings in a start.  However, the Tampa Bay Rays bats could get him no run support, and the left-hander fell to 0-6 on the year as the Baltimore orioles shut them out 5-0 Monday at Tropicana Field for their fifth consecutive loss.

Snell allowed just a single run through the first seven frames, a solo homer by Adam Jones with one out in the third.

But the left-hander started the eighth inning at 102 pitches, allowing a base hit by Ruben Tejada and a bunt single by former Rays farmhand Joey Rickard.  Manager Kevin Cash then went to Sergio Romo, to try and get out of the jam, but he allowed base hits by Jones and Manny Machado to allow both inherited runners to score, and a sacrifice fly Jonathan Schoop brought in Jones to make it 4-0.

A throwing error by Adeiny Hechaverria in the ninth added another run for Baltimore to set the score at 5-0.

Tampa Bay had a number of opportunities to score off Orioles pitching, from a bases loaded chance for Evan Longoria in the third, to a leadoff triple by Mallex Smith that couldn't lead to a run in the fifth, to Tim Beckham getting doubled off first base in the seventh after a flyout to right by Adeiny Hechaverria.

The loss drops Tampa Bay back to 51-49 on the season.

Jake Faria (4-1, 2.52 ERA) will look to end the losing streak Tuesday, when he takes on left-hander Wade Miley (4-8, 5.58 ERA).  First pitch is scheduled for 7:1, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 6:00 with The Inside Pitch presented by Sykes Lakeland.
