Pitcher's Duel Goes Way Of Cubs In Maddon's Return

ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- Chris Archer allowed two runs over six innings, but was outdueled by Mike Montgomery as the Tampa Bay Rays dropped a 2-1 pitcher's duel Tuesday at Tropicana Field.

Chicago started the scoring in the top of the second inning, when Kyle Schwarber turned around a 96 MPH fastball from Archer and sent it deep into the seats in right for his 28th home run of the season and a 1-0 lead.

The contest remained 1-0 until the fifth when Jason Heyward led off with a single off Archer (9-11).  Addison Russell's fielder's choice erased Heyward at second base, but Javy Baez's double down the left field line scored Russell from first base to make it 2-0.

Montgomery (7-8) did not allow a hit until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Brad Miller's solo homer got the Rays back to within a run, though Tampa Bay could not even get another base runner in the contest.

Chicago got perfect innings of relief by Pedro Strop and Carl Edward Jr. before Wade Davis finished thinsg off for his 32nd save.

Tampa Bay will look to salvage a split of the two-game series in Wednesday's finale, as Blake Snell (3-6, 4.25 ERA) takes on Jon Lester (11-7, 4.30 ERA).  First pitch is scheduled for 7:10, with coverage on WDAE starting at 6:00 with The Inside Pitch presented by Sykes Lakeland.
