TAMPA, FL (via Tampa Bay Lightning Communications) – More than 100 local kids have been nominated by their parents, teachers and family members for their heroic deeds and acts of selflessness. During a special judging event Thursday, June 5, 2014, former Tampa Bay Lightning Team Captain Dave Andreychuk will help St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital patients choose winners in three age categories. ThunderBug and members from the Lightning Girls also will attend the celebration.

The hospital will recognize all of the nominees for their good deeds and announce the winners during the Tampa Bay Storm’s local heroes night at the Tampa Bay Times Forum June 21.

Since 1996, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s Kids Are Heroes program has recognized more than 1,600 children between the ages 5 and 18 who have performed heroic deeds or displayed acts of selflessness and good citizenship. Some examples of past winners include children who have pulled an accident victim from a burning car, saved a sibling from a dog attack, donated their hair to make wigs for cancer patients and called 911 to help their relative suffering from a heart attack. Top winners are chosen by pediatric patients at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, making it the only program in the area designed for and judged by kids.

WHAT:           17th Annual Kids Are Heroes judging event, featuring former Tampa Bay Lightning Team Captain Dave Andreychuk, team mascot ThunderBug, Lightning Girls and pediatric patients.

WHEN:          Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 5 p.m.
