According to NHL Network analyst Kevin Weekes the firing of Guy Boucher was going to happen regardless, but was sped up by the team's recent lackluster outings.

"My sources were telling me it would have been done in the offseason," Weekes said on the Ron and Ian Show Monday morning.

Weekes said he spoke personally to Lightning GM Steve Yzerman over the weekend.

While Weekes has heard it's a "two-horse race" between AHL affiliate coach Jon Cooper and Lindy Ruff, there is a third candidate possibly in the mix.

WDAE has learned the decision on a new head coach could be made before the Lightning's next game, which is Tuesday night.
