USF will not exactly be carrying momentum into the American Athletic Conference tournament.
Quenton DeCosey hit a driving jumpshot right before the final buzzer as Temple, which trailed by 18 with less than nine minutes to go, stunned the Bulls 66-65 on Senior Day at the Sun Dome.
Temple (9-21) had not won a road game all year. And it sure liked nothing would change with the Bulls using the fast break to great effect, building a 54-36 lead on senior Victor Rudd's jumper with nine minutes left.
But the Owls would find their offense, aggressively driving to the basket and converting nine straight field goals to tie things up with 1:50 left. Still Corey Allen, who 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, made a driving shot and when Temple went 1-for-2 on free throws it was Bulls ball with a minute remaining.
Allen missed a wild shot and Dalton Pepper, who led Temple with 20 points, gave his team the lead on a fastbreak lay-up with :17 left.
Still the Bulls look to be avoiding the collapse when Corey Perry tipped in Rudd's miss with just 4.6 seconds left. Temple called timeout and got the ball up to DeCosey (18 points), and he took a dribble, slipped a defender and lifted a high arching shot over John Egbunu's block attempt.
USF went 3-15 in the AAC and is 12-19 overall.
Rudd finished with 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting. His highlight dunk got the Bulls going after a lethargic first few minutes as Temple went up 5-0. USF lead 33-26 at the half.
Martino Brock had 16 points, 5 in a row after Temple's 9-0 run that trimmed the Bulls' margin to nine. But he also had a pivotal mistake, when with less than five minutes to go and USF still up 10 he grabbed an offensive rebound -- and instead of restarting the offense, decided to try and run through three defenders, turning the ball over.
