The Florida Gators are one of the hottest mens basketball teams in the country as they continued to improve on their undefeated SEC record with a 69-59 win over Kentucky on Saturday night. Yesterday the Gators were bumped up in the Associated Press Top 25 poll to the second spot and even received one first place vote which they stole from the current number one seeded Syracuse Orange.
The question remains as the calendar inches closer to March, are the Gators the favorite to win the NCAA Championship? Sporting News college basketball inside Mike Decourcy joined WDAE’s ‘The Sports Page’ on Tuesday and attempted to answer that question.
“I think they have the potential to win it but I wouldn’t put them at the top of the list of teams to win it” said Decourcy. “I think they have the ability to do that (win a championship).”
As well as the Gators are playing this season, rattling off wins in their last 17 games, Decourcy said the success is nice but fans need to realize who the Gators are playing.
“There is a feeling every time that they roll through the SEX that they’re the best team in the country, and people forget that they’re not getting challenged a lot” said Decourcy. “It’s a bad league (SEC), there’s no other way to say it. It’s a bad league. It’s not just ‘not having a good year’, we’re past that. We’re down to five year in which they’ve had sub-standard leagues.”
Decourcy believes this year’s Gators squad is much better than the previous years because they have put their focus on evolving their offense to get to a level where their defense is.
