It was the early morning hours when Tampa Bay Times Rays beat reporter Marc Topkin spoke with Rays pitcher Matt Moore after a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.  The news was not good as Moore revealed to Topkin that he will undergo Tommy John surgery on his injured elbow ending his season and possibly not returning till after the season begins in 2015.

Topkin recounted the conversation in an interview on WDAE's 'The Sports Page' Tuesday morning.

"After the game I checked in with Joe Maddon again and he said that there would be something tomorrow and not today (on Moore's status)," said Topkin.  "I just thought I wanted to wait and check with Matt himself.  I saw Matt and you could just tell immediately from the vibe things weren't good.  We started talking about it and there you have the news."
