Coming into a four-game series in Texas, the Rays were hoping for a minimum result of 3-1. But right when they lost late Tuesday's contest in extra innings that became a tough proposition.
Namely because Yu Darvish was the man they were set to face in the finale.
But not anymore. On Wednesday Texas placed Darvish on the disabled list due to elbow inflammation. Instead the Rays will face Robbie Ross, who was sent down in late June after struggling to a 5.61 ERA in 18 appearances (nine starts).
At Triple-A Ross pitched to an ERA over 5.00.
Jake Odorizzi faces Ross Thursday, and if the Rays win they would be back to within one game of the .500 mark heading into a home sereis with the Yankees.
Despite previous injuries Darvish was fourth in the American League with 182 strikeouts.
