Downward Spiral Continues For Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (620 WDAE) -- The summer of woe continued Monday for the Tampa Bay Rays.

David Price had one poor inning, but it was all the Seattle Mariners needed to defeat the Rays 3-0 to take three of four from Tampa Bay in their series.

Price's stumble came in the third inning, as he loaded the bases with one out on singles by John Buck, Willie Bloomquist, and James Jones before Robinson Cano doubled in Buck and Bloomquist to open the scoring.  Stefen Romero then grounded out to plate Jones to make it 3-0.

Meanwhile the Rays offense sputtered at every opportunity they had.  Tampa Bay stranded a runners in scoring position in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings, the latter two had runners at third base.  All in all, ten Rays runners were left on the basepaths.

Despite the hiccup, Price (4-6) would pitch through the eighth inning, striking out ten while walking just one.

Seattle used Erasmo Ramirz wor the first 4 2/3 innings, then got 4 /13 innings of relief out of four relievers, including Fernando Rodney, who worked a scoreless ninth for his 18th save.

The loss is Tampa Bay's 13th in their last 14 contests.

The St. Louis Cardinals start a two-game series at Tropicana Field Tuesday, with Jake Odorizzi (2-6, 5.31 ERA) taking on Adam Wainwright (8-3, 5.31 ERA).  First pitch is scheduled for 7:10, with coverage on WDAE starting at 6:00 with the Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.
