Go Figgy: Figueroa's Pinch Hit Gives Rays Second Straight Walkoff

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (620 WDAE) -- It's been a memorable couple of days for infielder Cole Figueroa.

One night after collecting his first Major league hit, Figueroa tallied his first big-league RBI, scoring Desmond Jennings on an double to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 1-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox Friday night at Tropicana Field.

Figueroa's base hit came after Desmond Jennings led off the ninth by drawing a walk off reliever Andrew Miller.  Red Sox manager John Farrell then went to former Ray Burke Badenhop rather than have Miller face Thursday night's hero, Sean Rodriguez.  Joe Maddon countered by pinch-hitting Figueroa, and after Jennings stole second base on a pitch-out, Figueroa laced a double in to the right-center field gap to bring home the Tampa Bay centerfielder.

Both Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer and Boston's John Lackey had quality outings.  Archer finished six innings, allowing four hits and four walks, but tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts.  Lackey, meanwhile threw in to the eighth inning, giving up just five hits -- all singles -- and a walk.

Tampa Bay had chances to open the scoring in the first and seventh inning, as they got runners to third base in each inning, but stranded them there.  Boston never got a runner past second base, and only once did they get a runner in scoring position with less than two out.

The Rays have now won two straight after dropping four in a row, while the Red Sox saw their losing streak reach eight games.

Tampa Bay will look for a series win Saturday, when David Price (4-4, 4.28 ERA) takes on Jake Peavy (1-2, 4.33 ERA).  First pitch is scheduled for 4:10, with coverage on WDAE starting at 3:00 with the Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.
