Following Monday's controversial loss to the Texas Rangers, the Tampa Bay Rays also announced that pitcher Jeff Niemann has decided after getting a second opinion on his shoulder to undergo surgery that will likely cause him to miss the 2013 season.

"He was given the choice of getting an injection and rehabbing or surgery, and he chose the surgery," head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield said Monday.  "He feels he can't compete without it.

"He feels like right now it's bothering him too much that he just doesn't have his confidence that he can do what he needs to do."

Porterfield said the surgery, which will repair both labrum and rotator cuff damage, will take place sometime later this week.
