Andrew Zimbalist, a noted sports economist, has no doubts. Not only do the Rays need a new stadium it needs to be in downtown Tampa.

Zimbalist gave his thoughts on the Rays stadium situation in an interview with the Tampa Bay Times that ran Monday. He was in town for a lecture at USF.

"The Trop is a bad facility in a bad location," Zimbalist told the Times, adding that the team has done all it can to ensure good attendance and yet ranks last in the league in that category.

As for downtown Tampa Zimbalist says it's important to have the facility as close to a business district as possible.

Zimbalist also gets into the lease agreement the city of St. Petersburg has with the Rays.
