In somewhat of a surprise move the Rays announced that Juan Carlos Oviedo was designated for assignment Saturday.

With Jeremy Hellickson's return to the team after an All-Star Break stint in the minors, it was widely believed Erik Bedard would be let go by the team. But it instead chose Oviedo, who had shown some promise and was even considered a closer candidate before Jake McGee took over the role unofficially.

Oviedo had struggled recently.

"Not easy," is how Rays manager Joe Maddon characterized the move. "One thing we do have is bullpen arms."

Bedard maintains his role as long man and the bullpen and next man up to start should anyone in the rotation gets hurt.
