The Tampa Bay Rays have claimed first baseman Jerry Sands off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Sands was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh a week and a half ago after a season with the Pirates triple-a affiliate where he batted .207 with seven home runs and 34 RBI.

Sands played 70 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers between 2011-2012 with a total of four home runs and 27 RBI.  In his minor league career, Sands is a .276 hitter with 128 homers in 2433 plate appearances.
