Another in a long line of frustrating losses for the Rays.  The home team blew an early 4-0 lead as the Tigers went on to beat the Rays 8-6 in 11 innings on Tuesday night from Tropicana Field.  The Rays fall to 61-64 while the Tigers improve to 67-56.

Rays jumped on Tigers starter Max Scherzer in the first inning.  Ben Zobrist was hit by a pitch and Evan Longoria walked.  That set up James Loney’s 3-run HR to make it 3-0 Tampa Bay early on.  Zobrist didn’t seem too pleased with the plunking in the 1st.  He got some payback in the second inning with an RBI single to make it 4-0 Rays.

The Tigers were able to break through with 3 runs against Rays starter Chris Archer in the 5th.  A James Loney throwing error loaded the bases.  Ian Kinsler drew a walk for the first run.  A fielder’s choice by Torii Hunter plated the second run.  Then, Miguel Cabrera lined a shot to center field that Desmond Jennings dove for and made the catch— or so we thought.  Tigers believed Jennings trapped it and challenged the play—and it was overturned.  Cabrera was credited with an RBI single to make it 4-3 Rays.

Archer got into more trouble in the 6th.  He issued back-to-back walks with two outs.  Then, Rajai Davis delivered a big 2-out RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.  That ended Archer’s night.  He was charged with 4 runs (1 earned) over 5 and 2/3 innings with 5 walks and 6 strikeouts.

Rays reliever Joel Peralta’s struggles reached another level on Tuesday night— he allowed a solo blast to J.D. Martinez in the 8th to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead.  Rays tied it in the 8th on a sacrifice fly by Vince Belnome.

The Tigers took control in the 11th against Grant Balfour, who couldn’t find the strike zone.  Kinsler lead off the inning with a triple on a ball that Kevin Kiermaier dove for and missed.  Balfour walked 3 batters, including Victor Martinez with the bases loaded to make it 6-5 Detroit.  Tigers added two more insurance runs to ice it.
