MADDON GOES TO CLOSER BY COMMITTEE: Manager Joe Maddon named reliever Grant Balfour the team's closer when he was signed in the offseason.  That role changed Monday.

Maddon said before Monday's game that he and the coaching staff had decided to go to a "closer by committee" approach to the end of games

"I just wanted to take a little bit off [Balfour's] plate right now and get him going in the right direction again," the skipper explained.  "Here's one of the most consistent relievers over the last couple of years in the big leagues, and it just hasn't been working.  So for right now, I just wanted to back off a little bit."

GUYER STARTS BASEBALL ACTIVITIES: Outfielder Brandon Guyer had his cast removed from his broken left thumb Monday morning, and X-rays showed the fracture in the digit had healed.  Guyer said he took dry swings and did tee work, as well as played catch for the first time.

Guyer says he is still aiming for a return in mid-June.
