Rays super-utility man Ben Zobrist left the team Sunday after learning that his grandmother had died.

The switch-hitter is not in Sunday's lineup against the Colorado Rockies, and is not expected to be back with the team Monday when they return home to start a ten-game homestand.

Manager Joe Maddon said prior to Sunday's game that the team will not place Zobrist on the bereavement list and call up a player from the minors because the move would mean the earliest Zobrist could return is Wednesday, and they expect him to be back by Tuesday.

With Zobrist's departure and Yunel Escobar still recovering from being hit by a pitch on the hand Saturday, that means Sean Rodriguez will play shortstop in the interim.
