The mystery of why the Chris Smith, the Storm's top defensive player, has missed a few games has been solved.
It's a good thing -- for Smith. Not so for the Storm, who announced Tuesday that the defensive back has signed with the Montreal Alouettes with the Canadian Football League.
"While losing him is bittersweet, we are proud that he will get the chance to play with teh Alouettes," said Storm VP of football operations Jeff Gooch.
Smith, a Palmetto native, had six interceptions including consecutive two-pick games. The first game he was held out, with no explanation given at the time, was a loss in Orlando where the secondary struggled mightily and failed to record a stop until the closing minutes.
Per Arena rules Smith has been placed on other-league exempt meaning the Storm retain his rights should he not make the Montreal squad.
