(via Tampa Bay Storm Communications) - The Tampa Bay Storm is pleased to announce the return of Doug Kay as assistant head coach, and Chris Hovan as defensive coordinator, along with the addition of Doug Miller as offensive coordinator, announced Storm president Derrick Brooks.

“We are pleased to have Coach Kay and Coach Hovan back for the 2014 season,” said Brooks.  “Last year both gentlemen helped greatly improve our defense.  With the addition of Doug [Miller] to the coaching staff, we believe that we are in a position to build upon last season’s success.”

“There is still a lot of work to be done as we prepare for next season,” said Storm head coach Lawrence Samuels.  “I am confident in the ability of this coaching staff and I believe the organization has taken a step in the right direction as we build a winning program.  We are looking forward to a great season.”

Kay returns for his third season with the Tampa Bay Storm.  He began his AFL coaching career with the team in 1993 as the defensive coordinator for the ArenaBowl VII Champions.  Last season, with a new defensive philosophy, the Storm defense saw a marked improvement under his direction.  Kay has over 50 years of coaching experience and will continue to oversee the growth of the defense during the 2014 season.

“It is great to be back with the Storm for the 2014 season,” said Kay.  “The organization is in the process of putting together a team that the fans can be proud of and I believe we will be competitive in the upcoming season.”

Hovan enters his second season with the Storm as the team’s defensive coordinator.  In 2013, he helped develop the Storm’s defensive line.  Prior to joining the coaching staff, the 11-year National Football League veteran and former All-Pro (2002) spent two years at the University of South Florida where he was a member of the Strength and Conditioning staff.  During his playing days, Hovan spent five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent.  He spent five seasons with Tampa Bay before moving on to the St. Louis Rams.

“I am excited to enter my second season as a part of the Storm coaching staff,” added Hovan.  “I am looking forward to getting back on the sidelines and helping this organization win a championship.”

Miller enters his first season with the Storm and his fifth as a coach in the Arena Football League.  The Tampa, Florida native joins the Storm after spending the past two seasons on the New Orleans VooDoo’s coaching staff.  He began his coaching career with the Orlando Predators in 2010.  Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Miller played seven seasons with the Predators and was a two-time All-Ironman Team selection.  He began his playing career with the Atlanta Falcons (NFL).
