Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote an article for TIME.com about Donald Sterling and the controversy surrounding the comments Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling made last week. Kareem spent three months working for Sterling as a member of the coaching staff in 2000 and said "[Sterling] was congenial, even inviting me to his daughter's wedding."
Since Jabbar worked for the Clippers' organization Sterling has been involved in at least 3 different racially charged controversial incidents. In the article Jabbar asks why after so many racial issues surrounding Sterling did the latest issue spark so much backlash. After being sued for housing discrimination in 2006 and again for employment discrimination based on age and race in 2009, why does a "ridiculous conversation with his girlfriend" become the catalyst for pushing sterling out of the NBA.
Jabbar is not fighting for Sterling but rather looking to start to "eliminate racism at its first signs" instead of waiting until it becomes front page news.
