California Chrome Triple Crown Run Could Come To Early End?

California Chrome won the Preakness Stakes over the weekend and is on pace to attempt to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.  However the magical run for Chrome could come to an end before the final stage even begins, because of nasal strips.

California Chrome might abandon his Triple Crown bid if New York officials do not allow the colt to wear a nasal strip in the Belmont Stakes according to trainer Art Sherman.

"I think it opens up his air passage and gives him that little extra oomph that he needs, especially going a mile and a half [which is the length of the Belmont Stakes, the longest of the three races]," Sherman said, according to the Associated Press. "Anytime you can have a good air passage, that means a lot for these thoroughbreds."

In the past New York officials have not allowed horses to wear a nasal strip in the Belmont Stakes including I’ll Have Another in 2012.

The final decision will be made by the New York Racing Association with the Belmont Stakes set to run June 7.
