Wilmer Font came within an out of qualifying for a win, and Matt Duffy had three hits and drove in a pair as the Tampa Bay Rays salvaged the finale of a four-gane series against the New York Yankees 3-1 Sunday in the Bronx.
After a scoreless first inning, Tampa Bay jumped on Yankees starter CC Sabathia in the second, with Willy Adames singling to begin the frame, and moving to third on Adeiny Hechavarria's base hit. Carlos Gomez doubled in Adfames for a 1-0 advantage, and after Rob Refsnyder struck out and Johnny Field popped out, Duffy picked his teammates up with a two-run single to give the Rays a 3-0 lead.
That proved to be all the offense Kevin Cash's players needed, as Font worked through the first four innings allowing just three hits and a walk. He got the first two outs in the fifth, but was lefted by Cash after allowing a solo homer to Aaron Hicks beginning the third time through the batting order.
Font's relief, Jose Alvarado, walked Aaron Judge and Didi Gregorius but struck out Giancarlo Stanton to end the threat.
Chaz Roe (1-1) worked scoreless sixth and seventh innings to warn the win, with Diego Castillo putting up a zero in the eighth and Sergio Romo allowed a walk to Neil Walker, but no runs in the ninthy to earn his third save of the year.
The win ends Tampa Bay's three-game losing streak overall and five-game skid against the Yankees overall this season.
