ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- Wilmer Font and four relievers combined to throw a four-hit shutout, and Willy Adames homered and drove in a pair as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the New York Yankees 4-0 at Tropicana Field Saturday.
The Rays jumped on Yankees starter Sonny Gray early, with Jake Bauers doubling in Kevin Kiermaier, who singled to begin the bottom of the first and end an 0 for 12 stretch since coming off the 60-day disabled list.
Back-to-back doubles in the second off Gray gave the Rays a 2-0 lead, as C.J. Cron led off the inning with a two-base hit, followed by a double from Daniel Robertson. Mallex Smith sacrificed Robertson to third and Adames singled him in to make it a 3-0 game.
That advantage would stand up until the seventh, when Adames ended a stretch of 15 straight hitters retired by Gray by tucking an offering just inside the right field foul pole for his second home run of the year.
Font worked 5 2/3 on three-hit baseball, walking one and striking out four, lowering his ERA with Tampa Bay to 1.63, exiting after a walk to Aaron Judge with two out. Jonny Venters allowed an infield single to Didi Gregorius, but Ryne Stanek struck out Giancarlo Stanton to preserve the shutout and then put up a scoreless seventh inning on top of it. Chaz Roe worked a perfect eighth, and Sergio Romo followed suit in the ninth to finish the game.
Tampa Bay can sweep the Yankees for the first time in St. Petersburg since July 29-31, 2016 with a win in Sunday's finale.
