The Sights, Sounds, Crashes Of The Coke Zero Sugar 400

The fireworks that always come with the 4th of July race at Daytona International Speedway weren't just the ones at the end of the race on Saturday. AJ Allmendinger probably said it best in the post race press conference, "It was a race of survival." The race was riddled with cautions. There were 10 of them which caused more than a quarter of the race to be ran under the yellow flag. The big one came early in the 2nd stage when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Brad Keselowski contact caused a chain reaction at the top of the field. All 3 Penske cars, Kurt Busch, and pole sitter Chase Elliott were among those taken out in the carnage. Before we were done speaking with the drivers after they left the infield care center, Stenhouse spurred another accident. This time it was Kyle Busch and William Byron who were the collateral damage. At the end of the day it came down to last year's champion and his former teammate. The younger Erik Jones ended up beating Martin Truex Jr. to the line for his 1st career victory. That victory broke up the string of wins for the "Big 3" of Truex, Busch, and Kevin Harvick and locked the 2nd year driver into the playoffs in his 2nd full season in the Monster Energy Nascar Cup Series. From the flyover, to the angry drivers, to the fireworks; check out all of the highlights below.
