ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- Masahiro Tanaka tossed a three-hit shutout, while Yankees hitters scratched across three runs on Rays starter Yonny Chirinos en route to a 4-0 shutout of Tampa Bay Tuesday at Tropicana Field.

Chirinos (0-2) fell behind in the top of the first inning as Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge each singled , and after a wild pitch by the Tampa Bay right-hander allowed both runners to move up a base, Didi Gregorius put the Rays up for good with a groundout that plated Gardner.

The game remained 1-0 until the fifth when Chirinos hit Brandon Drury with a pitch and Neil Walker singled him to third base before Tyler Wade was brought in to pinch-run.  Austin Romine then brought in Wade with a groundout of his own for a 2-0 lead.

Romine would extend New York's lead to 3-0 in the seventh as Miguel Andujar singled, moving to third on a double by Greg Bird.  Wade struck out for the first out of the inning, and Walker was intentionally walked to load the bases for the Yankees catcher, who took the first pitch he saw and lined it to right for a sacrifice fly, scoring Andujar and ending Chirinos' night.

Chih-Wei Hu allowed the Yankees to take a 4-0 lead in the ninth, as Walker's base hit scored Andujar, who started the inning with a double.

Tanaka (8-2) retired the first 12 Rays hitters he faced before C.J. Cron singled to begin the home fifth.  Cron would have two of Tampa Bay's three hits on the night, adding a two-out double in the seventh.  Catcher Jesus Sucre had the other hit, singling in the sixth.

The right-hander got out of jams in both the fifth and sixth by getting arguably the two fastest players on the Rays to hit into inning-ending double plays.  Mallex Smith hit into a 3-6-1 twin-killing in the fifth, while Kiermaier's 4-6-3 double play ended the following frame.
