Robertson Needs Surgery On Thumb, 2018 Looks Over

ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- Tampa Bay Rays infielder got the worst news possible Sunday after seeing the team's hand specialist Dr. Doug Carlin about his sprained left thumb.

Robertson said he'll have surgery on the thumb to repair the injury, and will likely miss the remainder of the 2018 season.

In 87 games this year with the Rays, Robertson hit .262/.382/.415 with nine home runs and 34 RBI.

He injured his thumb Friday sliding head first into second base in the eighth inning of Tampa Bay's 3-2 ten-inning loss to the White Sox.  Robertson stayed in the game and scored the first run of the game for the Rays before being replaced by Willy Adames.

The Rays selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Brandon Lowe Saturday to take Robertson's spot on the roster.
