The outcome wasn't what you wanted as a Tampa Bay Lightning fan, but it sure was an entertaining game.
The Lightning gave up a pair in the first and third periods and Predators goalie Pekka Rinne made 42 saves as Tampa Bay lost to Nashville 4-1 on Thursday night at Amalie Arena.
Nashville opened up the scoring in the first period on a seemingly harmless play.
Preds defenseman Mattias Ekholm wristed a shot on net and it looked like Andrei Vasilevskiy would have no issue making the save. But Kyle Turris reached around Braydon Coburn and deflected it past Vasy and in to give Nashville the 1-0 lead 6:02 into the 1st.
The teams looked to be heading into the middle stanza with that being the score, but the Predators scored with seven seconds remaining in the first period on one of the prettiest goals you're ever going to see.
Nashville's Roman Josi pinched in from the point and made a nice spin move to keep the puck in the zone. He then immediately went to the net and looked for the pass. His teammate Ryan Johansen took the puck in the corner and backhanded a no-look pass through the slot and Josi fired it past Vasilevskiy to put the Preds up 2-0.
The teams played a pretty even second period, until the Lightning fired up the crowd with a goal of their own.
Fresh off a fantastic display of effort along the boards by Mathieu Joseph, Slater Koekkoek snuck in from the point and Alex Killorn spotted him open on the left side. Koekkoek snapped one past Rinne and the Bolts cut the Nashville lead to 2-1.
The Lightning put the pressure on big time in the third period, but Rinne was just a little bit better and the Bolts just could not find the equalizer.
Ryan Johansen and Miikka Salomaki scored in the third to seal the deal for the Predators.
Rinne stopped 42 of 43 Lightning shots on the night. Vasy stopped 20 of 23.
