Seminoles Drop Season Opener To Virginia Tech

The Florida State Seminoles (0-1, 0-1) failed to score an offensive touchdown at home for the first time since 2008 and fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies (1-0, 1-0) 24-3 on Labor Day.

The Hokies opened the game as if they were going to run the table, and orchestrated a 75-yard touchdown drive to start the game.  After the Seminoles got the ball and fumbled it away, Virginia Tech drove the ball down for a 23-yard field goal to make it 10-0.

After Ricky Aguayo missed a 32-yard filed goal in the second quarter, he nailed a 22-yard shot to pull FSU within 10-3.  The Hokies made the point that they were there to stay late in the second quarter when Logan Tyler had a put blocked by Chris Cunningham that Eric Kumah returned for a 3-yard TD to make it 17-3.  Virginia Tech controlled the pace the rest of the way, and added some insurance in the fourth quarter when Josh Jackson hit Eric Kumah for a 49-yard touchdown that made it 24-3.

Willie Taggart lost his debut as Seminoles head coach as Florida State struggled on offense throughout the game.  Deondre Francios went 22-35 with no touchdowns and three interceptions in the loss for Florida State, while Cam Akers ran for a game-best 82 yards for the Seminoles.

Florida State returns to action next Saturday when they host Samford in Tallahassee - kickoff is scheduled for 7:20 PM.
