The Tampa Bay Lightning didn't make many mistakes Tuesday, but the ones they did make cost them.
Richard Rakell's power play goal in overtime allowed the Anaheim Ducks to extend their lead in the Pacific Division to four points over Edmonton, defeating the Lightning 2-1 at Honda Center.
Despite not scoring in the first 20 minutes, Tampa Bay controlled the first period of play, outshooting the Ducks 7-2 and had two other chances at wide open nets that ended up missing the goal mouth.
The Lightning finally broke through four minutes into the second, as Valteri Filppula found a deflection from Nikita Nesterov and smacked the puck past John Gibson for his seventh goal of the year.
Anaheim stormed back on their next shift, as Ryan Getzlaf steals an outlet pass and wrists the puck from the blue line past an unsuspecting Ben Bishop for his sixth goal of the year to even the contest.
The Ducks tried to finish off the game in regulation, but Bishop, who made just nine saves through the first two periods, stopped all ten Anaheim shots in the third.
Tyler Johnson ended up taking a hooking penalty just 50 seconds into overtime, allowing Anaheim, who was just 1-8 playing 3 on 3 this year, to take a 4 on 3 advantage. Rakell needed just four seconds to end the game, taking the puck from Ryan Kesler after the Ducks' center won the faceoff and beating Bishop for his 19th goal of the year.
The Lightning leave southern California with three of a possible four points, and currently sit three points out of a possible playoff spot.
The six-game road trip continues Thursday, as Tampa Bay heads to San Jose for a matchup with the defensing Western Conference champion Sharks. Face-off is set for 10:30, and will be heard on 970 WFLA.
