Rays Use Late Comeback To Top Phillies

CLEARWATER (620 WDAE) -- Minor-leaguer David Olmedo-Barrera homered twice in the last two innings, including a three-run blast in the ninth to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday at Spectrum Field.

Olmedo-Barrera, a 12th round pick out of Cal State-Fullerton in 2015, started the eighth inning with a pinch-hit home run off Mark Leiter Jr. into the bullpens in left, making it a 3-1 game.  Thomas Milone's RBI fielder's choice later in the inning cut the deficit to a single run.

He then got a chance in the ninth after Ryan Boldt and Johnny Monell each singled off Hector Neris to start the ninth, and unloaded a blast to right that gave the Rays the lead for good.

Nathan Eovaldi, who got the start for Tampa Bay, worked into the fourth inning, leaving after allowing an infield single to Odubel Herrera and a double to Rhys Hoskins.  Chirinos walked Aaron Altherr and got Maikel Franco to bounce into a 5-2-3 double play, but with Jorge Alfaro at the plate, uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Hoskins to score the first run of the game.

Philadelphia added two more runs in the fifth off Chirinos on an RBI groundout by Cesar Hernandez and a sacrifice fly from Carlos Santana.

The Rays got four perfect innings of relief from Chaz Roe, Jose Alvarado, Dan Jennings and Dan Runzler to end the game.

Tampa Bay returns to Port Charlotte Sunday for another matchup against the Minnesota Twins, with Jake Faria taking on Anibal Sanchez.  First pitch is scheduled fore 1:05, with coverage on WDAE starting at 12:30 with Countdown to Opening Day.
