Eovaldi Needs Another Surgery, To Start Year On DL

ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays idea of having four scheduled starters and a bullpen day took a hit before the first game was even played.

The Rays announced Wednesday that right-hander Nathan Eovaldi requires surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow and has been placed on the 10-day disabled list.

The 28-year-old, who missed all of 2017 recovering from a second Tommy John surgery, had gone 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in five spring starts.

The Rays say Jake Faria, originally scheduled to pitch Monday's road opener against the New York Yankees, will now pitch Sunday, with Monday's starting pitcher yet to be announced.

To take Eovaldi's place on the active roster, right-hander Austin Pruitt was recalled from Triple-A Durham.

In addition, to set the active roster at 25 players before Thursday's opener against the Boston Red Sox, right-hander Jose De Leon (Tommy John surgery) was also placed on the 10-day disabled list and reliever Daniel Hudson was released.

The active roster for the Rays is below:

Pitchers (12): Jose Alvarado, Matt Andriese, Chris Archer, Yonny Chirinos, Alex Colome, Jake Faria, Andrew Kittredge, Austin Pruitt, Chaz Roe, Sergio Romo, Blake Snell, Ryan Yarbrough

Catchers (2): Wilson Ramos, Jesus Sucre

Infielders (6): C.J. Cron, Matt Duffy, Adeiny Hechavarria, Brad Miller, Daniel Robertson, Joey Wendle

Outfielders (5): Carlos Gomez, Kevin Kiermaier, Rob Refsnyder, Mallex SMith, Denard Span

10-day disabled list: Jose De Leon, Nathan Eovaldi
