The Tampa Bay Rays lost 2-1 to the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday Night at Comerica Park. The Rays, looking to get back to .500 for the first time since the second game of the season, were limited to one run by Tigers starter Matthew Boyd. Boyd allowed one run, seven hits & struck out seven in six innings to record his first win of the season. Meanwhile, the Rays lone run was scored on a run scoring force out by Third Baseman Matt Duffy in the fifth inning.
The Rays, trailing 1-0 in the fourth, had a scoring opportunity, when with two men on & one out, Designated Hitter Mike Refsnyder singled to centerfield. But Tigers Centerfielder Leonys Martin threw out Rays Catcher Wilson Ramos, who was trying to score from second. The play at the plate wasn’t even close & Ramos was out by several feet.
The lack of scoring by the Rays wasted starter Chris Archer’s performance. Archer, who took the loss, allowed two runs & six hits while striking out six & walking one in six innings. But the same man who stopped the Rays from scoring a run earlier in the game got the game-winning hit when in the fifth, Martin with one out doubled to right, scoring Catcher James McCann.
The Rays, who lost for just the second time in 11 games, were only able to register one hit in the final three innings. And in the ninth inning Tigers Reliever Shane Greene was able to record a 1-2-3 inning for the save.
The Rays will play the final game of their current road trip on Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park. Lefty Blake Snell (4-1 2.52) gets the start for Tampa Bay while the Tigers give the ball to Righty Michael Fulmer (1-2 2.77). Coverage begins on 620 WDAE at noon with Steve Carney & the Inside Pitch with first pitch scheduled for 1:10pm.
