The USF men’s basketball season ends with a 72-68 loss to Rutgers in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championship.
Victor Rudd led the Bulls with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist. Kadeem Jack led Rutgers with 18 points and 6 rebounds. He went 4-for-7 from three-point range. USF couldn’t find the net beyond the three-point line.
Overall this was a close game. Late in the game, Rutgers looked like it was taking its foot off the pedal allowing USF to hang around. The Bulls went 24-52 from the floor while Rutgers went 22-49.
It was J.J. Moore with a clutch offensive rebound after a missed free throw attempt by Kadeem Jack. The Bulls were snoozing when they had an opportunity to take the rebound to tie the game in the final seconds. Victor Rudd fouled Moore sending him to the line. Moore made both free throws basically icing it for the Scarlet Knights.
This loss sends USF on its way for spring break. The Bulls end their season 12-20. This was similar to last year when they finished 12-19. This is Stan Heath’s seventh season as head coach of the Bulls. Some think it may be his last. Heath’s Bulls were plagued by injuries this season, most notably point guard Anthony Collins. Heath has brought the Bulls to the NIT championship during the 2009-2010 season and to the NCAA tournament in the 2011-2012 season. Heath’s overall record at USF falls to 97-129.
