New University Of South Florida Athletic Director Mark Harlan began his tenure with a quick decision on the future of the Bulls basketball program by firing Stan Heath after six seasons at the helm. While the USF men's hoops program seems in a sort of disarray in the new American Athletic Conference, the search has begun for the new face of USF men's basketball.
ESPN analyst Dick Vitale joined WDAE's 'The Sports Page' on Wednesday morning and said he's hearing a hot rumor that the USF search could be diving into the Big East Conference for a proven winner.
"What I'm hearing, I heard it last night. I don't know how valid it is because you hear rumors, but this guy is pretty legit who I was talking to. And I'm hearing a strong rumor about Buzz Williams," said Vitale. "That would be hitting a grand slam."
Williams just wrapped up his sixth season at Marquette with a record of 139-65 including five appearances in the NCAA tournament with the Golden Eagles. Vitale was concerned however that the financials with South Florida may not be able to afford a coach like Williams with his proven track record. If that were the case, Vitale believes USF should look the way of Duke assistant Steve Wojeiechowski.
