(via Tampa Bay Buccaneers Communications) - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that they have signed free agent wide receiver Louis Murphy.
Murphy (6-2, 200) originally entered the league as a fourth-round pick (124th overall) of the Oakland Raiders in the 2009 NFL Draft and spent three seasons with the Raiders before being traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2012. He spent the 2013 season with the New York Giants. In his career, Murphy has appeared in 71 games with 24 starts, recording 121 receptions for 1,744 yards (14.4 avg.) and eight touchdowns. He has also rushed 14 times for 146 yards with one touchdown.
A native of St. Petersburg, Florida, where he played quarterback and wide receiver for Lakewood High School, Murphy returns to the Bay area with the Buccaneers. He attended the University of Florida, where he played in 48 games with 26 starts and helped the Gators to two BCS National Championships. Selected as a team captain his senior year, Murphy was also honored with Florida’s Forest K. Ferguson Award, given annually to the Gators’ senior football player who displays outstanding leadership, character and courage. He finished his collegiate career with 77 receptions for 1,245 yards and 13 touchdowns.
