Orioles Beat Rays 7-5

Posted June 17th, 2014 @ 10:42pm

The Orioles got a grand slam off the bat of Chris Davis on Tuesday night as they went on to beat the Rays 7-5 from Tropicana Field.  The Rays are now 1-6 against the O’s (36-34) this season.  Rays drop to 28-44 on the season.

The Orioles jumped all over Eric Bedard and the Rays in the third inning.  Bedard gave up two hits, a walk and hit Adam Jones with a pitch to push across the first run.  Then, Davis lifted a long fly ball down the left field line that hit the foul pole.  The umpires ruled the ball was in play for a double, but the play was challenged by Orioles manager Buck Showalter.  After review, it was ruled a grand slam for Davis and Baltimore had a 5-0 lead.  Bedard lasted 4+ innings and allowed 5 runs on 4 hits with two walks and 3 strikeouts.

Rays got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd when Sean Rodriguez and Desmond Jennings smacked back-to-back homers off Miguel Gonzalez to make it 5-2 Baltimore.  Then in the 5th, James Loney drove in a pair with a double to close the gap to 5-4.  Orioles added to their lead in the 7th when Steve Pearce launched a 2-run shot off Brad Boxberger to make it 7-4.

Rays got a sacrifice fly from Yunel Escobar in the 8th to make it 7-5 but they couldn’t get any closer.  Gonzalez (4-4) got the win.  Bedard takes the loss to drop to 3-5.  Zach Britton got his 8th save for Baltimore.

The Rays wrap up their 3-game series with the Orioles on Wednesday afternoon from Tropicana Field.  2-4 Alex Cobb throws for the Rays against 2-1 Kevin Gausman.  Our coverage on 620am WDAE and 95.3FM begins at 12pm with Tom Krasniqi and the Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.
