Two people with knowledge of the details tell the Associated Press that  Carmelo Anthony has informed the New York Knicks he intends to become a free agent and will opt out of the final year of his contract.  The Knicks superstar has until Monday to terminate the final year of his deal which would have payed Anthony $23.3 million.

Anthony has repeatedly said he planned to explore free agency this summer all the while Knicks team president Phil Jackson told Anthony after the season he may want to delay the decision and play out the final year of his deal.

He will be eligible to negotiate with teams starting July 1.  Anthony will have several suitors coming after his services including the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers and the Houston Rockets.
